Michigan Republicans have had a tough night, having lost every statewide and swing-seat race in the 3rd, 7th and 8th Districts. But it looks like they have picked up a seat previously held by Democrats in suburban and exurban Detroit: Republican John James appears to have won Michigan’s 10th District, which is mostly based in Macomb County. We don’t have a projection here yet, but James leads by 0.5 percentage points and Democrat Carl Marlinga has conceded defeat. The predecessor seat to this district was held by Democratic Rep. Andy Levin, but Levin decided against seeking reelection in the new district, which is now slightly GOP-leaning. Instead, Levin ran in the bluer 11th District next door against fellow Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens, a primary he lost. And given James’s narrow margin in the 10th District, Democrats may rue Levin’s choice to not try to defend this seat.
