High drama in the New Hampshire state House: They recounted the results of a district in which the Republican had been leading by one vote, 971 to 970. And the recount showed that it was actually a tie, 970 to 970! That brought the number of state House districts where Republicans are leading down to 200, while Democrats currently lead in 199. In other words, assuming no other recounts change anything, this one seat would decide who controls the chamber!

It’s not clear what happens in the event of a tied election. The most likely scenario seems to be that a joint session of the New Hampshire legislature would decide whom to seat, and because Republicans have more seats in the legislature overall (thanks to winning the state Senate), it seems likely they would seat a Republican, giving themselves the House majority. However, the tied result may also be challenged at a meeting of the state Ballot Law Commission after Thanksgiving, so the question could be resolved then.
