In New Jersey, Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy currently leads Republican Jack Ciattarelli by a strong 67 percent to 32 percent. However, only 5 percent of the expected vote is reporting. New Jersey hasn’t gotten as much attention as Virginia because the outcome isn’t really in question (it should be an easy Democratic hold), but the margin is just as important as Virginia’s for assessing where the national political environment stands.

It’s a good sign for polling in the midterms. Pinpointing the electorate in the first truly competitive statewide race of the post-Trump era was quite the task for pollsters. By November of next year, pollsters will have today’s data to build upon.
