To illustrate how the lack of a centralized source for vote totals can create uncertainty about the results, here are two sources other than Wasserman who have calculated slightly different leads for Tenney. The exact margin of her lead is important, given that the 22nd District could come down to just a handful of votes!

The big problem in New York is that there’s no centralized source for vote totals (the state is extremely casual about reporting absentee ballots, with some counties — as you can see — reporting them weeks after Election Day), which means we have to piece together the picture from individual county reports like this one. And inevitably, there are discrepancies, such as between Rosenblatt’s reporting that there is still a significant number of uncounted ballots and Wasserman’s suggestion that there isn’t.

Dave Wasserman of The Cook Political Report passes along the results of the ballots we’ve been waiting for out of Chenango County, New York. The 22nd District race between Brindisi and Tenney is now virtually tied. WBNG-TV’s Josh Rosenblatt had previously reported that there were a few hundred ballots remaining in some of the district’s other counties, but we don’t have specifics, so it’s really hard to know how the margin might change from here.
